For dinner, my friend and parents took me for some yummy steamboat. I’m happy to note that steamboat is the same as those in KL/PJ – whew… no surprises here.
Another “must-see” when in Melaka is the Portuguese Settlement – what more when it’s just after Christmas. The national level celebration for Christmas was held here on Boxing Day. However, the guest of honour, the PM sent his representative, YB Dato’ Rais Yatim, so he can cheer the Malaysia squad in the Suzuki Cup held at Bukit Jalil.
Nevertheless, the show must go on and it’s WAR in the settlement; Deco War that is. Besides funding from the State Government, the private sector also sponsors the residences to decorate their houses. To me, although the decorations are very colourful, it’s somewhat gaudy and garish-looking. Some are nicely done – more like ordinary home decorations.
I was a bit confused by the decorations of one particular house. It’s gaily decorated with Christmas trimmings and what nots as well as a octagonal mirror and “pa kwa” commonly found in Chinese Taoist houses to ward off evil spirits.

Besides houses all dressed up, trees (real/artificial) were also trimmed with lights all over the settlement, giving it a very festive atmosphere.

What’s in store tomorrow? Kuih Teow fried with sweet sauce!
